Childish Questions

Written by: Sana Anuar

“And what happens when there’s no one

To say «bless you» when I sneeze?”

What does happen when you’re left alone

And when there’s no one sitting by your side

To catch you, if you fall;

To open you a door, if your hands are full;

To pass the salt, if you’re place is way too far;

To offer you some tissues, if you cry.

What does happen when there’s no one

To simply bless you with their presence?

“Nothing.”

“Do I say that to myself?”

Do you bless yourself?

Do you hold the closest handrail?

Do you kick the door open?

Do you stretch your hand out through the table?

Do you wipe your tears with your sleeves?

Do you have to blaze your way yourself

Through the fogginess of loneliness?

“You don’t have to.”

“So do I stay silent?”

So do you pretend you didn’t sneeze?

So do you fall and not stand up?

So do you push the door you need to pull?

So do you eat the tasteless salad?

So do you let your snot flow freely?

So do you go on with your life

Pretending you’re okay?

“Mhm.”

“But why say «bless you» to others then?”

Why try and help someone, when you pretend

You’re well off on your own?

Why should you struggle through your day

And see someone doing the same

But then ignore it all, and go away?

Why should you live and breathe as hermits,

When you could help each other on the way?

“I can’t talk right now. I’m busy.”
